About Leikn

The Icelandic Association of Adult Education Providers - advancing lifelong learning since 2005.

Who We Are

Leikn — Samtök fræðsluaðila á Íslandi — is an umbrella organization for adult education providers across Iceland. Founded in 2005, Leikn creates a common platform for those involved in adult learning, advocating on their behalf with the Icelandic government and promoting active discourse around continuous education and lifelong learning.

The name Leikn comes from Old Norse, meaning skill, craft, and proficiency — values at the heart of our mission.

What We Do

Leikn works to strengthen adult education in Iceland through four key areas:

Advocacy

Representing adult education providers in dialogue with the Icelandic government and policy makers.

Collaboration

Facilitating communication and partnerships between education providers nationwide.

International Ties

Connecting Icelandic adult education to Nordic and European networks and best practices.

Knowledge Sharing

Hosting lectures, conferences, and events that advance professional development in the field.

Our Members

Leikn's membership is open to non-profit education providers operating outside of the formal education system whose primary function is offering adult learning for the public good. Today the association brings together 19 member organizations across the country

International Partnerships

Leikn is a member of the European Association for the Education of Adults (EAEA) and maintains active ties with Nordic adult education associations. Through these partnerships, Leikn ensures that Icelandic adult education stays connected to broader European policy developments and best practices.

History

Leikn was established in 2005 to unite Iceland's diverse landscape of adult education providers under a single voice. Since its founding, the association has organized national conferences (2009, 2015), facilitated regular professional lectures, and represented Icelandic adult education interests at both the national and European level.

The organization is headquartered in Akureyri and governed by a board elected by its member organizations at the annual general meeting.
